<strong>"Antinomies of Transition: Dualism and Economic Growth"</strong>
<strong>Abstract:</strong> The informal economy provides livelihood to the vast majority of working population in India. Most informal manufacturing enterprises comprise of petty commodity producers without any hired labor, where the enterprise primarily operates as an extension of the household. This study draws upon three rounds of enterprise-level surveys of the informal manufacturing sector conducted by the NSSO, covering the period 2001-2011, to analyze the process of reproduction of such noncapitalist enterprises. It is seen that the basic dualism within the Indian economy has been reinforced during a period of sustained economic growth, calling into question the imaginary of capitalist transition that animates much of the discourse on economic development. The analysis helps to foreground some fundamental contradictions inherent within the process of development in the current conjuncture.
